There were some things for which you simply couldn’t avoid needing other people. So, for a significant portion of my adult life, I practiced a careful detente with my employers, coworkers, and landlords: make sure you can tell them what they want to hear, and can give them what they want, and they’ll give you what you need and leave you alone otherwise.
